I read about the Linux foundations's core infrastructure census project. Related to this, we analyzed networking related issues in Linux applications a few years back in university:

The next step would have been to automatize scanning of the software in the repositories of distributions. We're not working actively anymore on this, but the analysis source code is still available if somebody is interested.
